9,000 cars have been clamped already since January 2019 in huge crackdown

Drivers in the UK are being urged to check their vehicle tax as thousands of drivers have had their cars clamped and issued huge VED fines as a result.

All motorists in the UK must tax their vehicle before driving on the roads, unless yours is exempt because the car you own is more than forty years old.

Earlier this year, a Government campaign was launched to tackle the number of drivers who fail to tax their vehicle yet still drive. The campaign began in January this year and so far 9,000 untaxed vehicles have been clamped.

Those motorists who try and dodge paying for road tax have been targeted since the campaign began, with DVLA enforcement officers looking for offending drivers in some of the UK’s major hotspots including Birmingham, Glasgow, London, Manchester and Northern Ireland.

If caught driving an untaxed vehicle, motorists could see their car or van being clamped and also issued with a hefty fine of up to £1,000.

“As well as the hard work we’re doing out on the roads every day, we’re running local advertising in each of the regions including radio, printed publications, poster sites, websites and on social media,” said Bethan Beasley, DVLA’s senior leader of enforcement partnerships, adding: “All of these activities together are designed to make the driving public think again if they’re considering not taxing their vehicle.”

Since the paper tax disc was abolished in October 2014, the number of motorists driving around without valid vehicle tax has increased.

Not having it displayed on our vehicles anymore has been blamed in the past for why drivers are failing to tax their vehicle, however, the DVLA send out a V11 letter prior to your tax being due as a reminder and this has details about what to do and how to pay.

If you’re uncertain as to whether your car tax is due for renewal, the easiest thing to do is visit the gov.uk website where you can enter your registration number.

On 1 April (next Monday), DVLA car tax rates are set to increase and could cost motorists up to £65 more.
