You could be fined up to £5,000 for driving ‘without due care and attention’

Drivers in the UK are being warned that they could be issued with a hefty fine as well as receiving points on their licence for not wearing sunglasses when the weather is bright and sunny.

Most of the UK enjoyed a warm and sunny Easter weekend, with many of us getting out and about to spend time with friends and family in the glorious sunshine after enduring months of rain and windy weather.

However, when we jump in our cars during a sunny spell, we often forget to prepare ourselves for the brightness and fail to remember how important having a good pair of sunglasses in our vehicle is.

Driver Warning: Not wearing sunglasses when behind the wheel on sunny days could land you in trouble for driving ‘without due care and attention’

It’s not a legal requirement in the UK to wear sunglasses whilst driving, however you could receive a £100 on-the-spot fine and three points on your licence for ‘careless’ or ‘dangerous’ driving and if the case ends up in court, this could increase to a whopping £5,000 and nine points on your driving licence and possibly a ban.

If pulled over, a police officer could claim that you was driving ‘without due care and attention’ if you was dazzled by the glare of the sun and not wearing sunglasses.

Rule 237 of the Highway Code states that drivers should slow down or stop if they are ‘dazzled by bright sunlight’ and goes on to explain what precautions should be taken if the weather outside is hot and sunny.

Having the right sunglasses in your vehicle is important – they shouldn’t be too dark or too tinted as this could also land the driver in trouble. For daytime driving, it’s recommended the driver wears filter category 2 lenses which transmit between 18% and 43% of light.
