Then stop and take a nap, as opening the window for fresh air doesn’t help!

If you’ve ever felt sleepy behind the wheel, you’ve probably resorted to opening the windows to let some fresh air in but according to the experts this doesn’t work – only sleep does!

Opening the car window does not help you to stay awake behind the wheel, however 66% of drivers in the UK think that it does.

A survey was carried out by the sleep and meditation app, Calm, who from speaking to 4,337 British, American and French adults, found that opening the car window was the biggest myth when it came to sleeping despite experts warning us that it doesn’t do anything to keep you from feeling drowsy.

Short, Simple, Clear Car Leasing

If you’re feeling drowsy on a long journey, pull over and take a nap for around 15 to 45 minutes – opening the window for some fresh air won’t help!

According to the National Sleep Foundation, neither does cranking up the radio or turning the air-con to ‘chill’ mode and could even be putting drivers, their passengers and other road users at risk.

The only effective way of curing drowsiness whilst driving is to pull over and take a nap for around 15 to 45 minutes.

However, according to the American Sleep Association this might not be sufficient enough to stop the drowsiness – “Even a 20-minute power nap in a safe area will, at best, give you another 30 minutes of safe driving.”

Some motorists turn to coffee to try and keep them awake, however this takes around 30 minutes before having any kind of effect and doesn’t work with everybody.

The best preventative measure to avoid drowsy driving is to get a good night’s sleep ahead of a long journey, says the national Sleep Foundation.

Around 25% of fatal accidents in the UK are caused by drivers falling asleep behind the wheel – the worrying thing is that 13% of motorists in the UK confessed to falling asleep whilst driving!
