Apparently, one in 10 UK drivers have no idea what it means!

Kwik Fit have carried out a new study and discovered some alarming statistics around the knowledge or lack of knowledge that drivers in the UK have about tyres. From the legal limits to what some tyre terminology actually means, far too many drivers in the UK have no idea.

The study found that just 25% of drivers can explain correctly what the UK legal tread requirements are, whilst 40% were wrong, 20% confessed to having no idea and 4% said it depended on the make of rubber.

Apparently, one in 10 UK drivers have no idea what is meant by tyre tread depth!

Even more alarming, was that 11% of motorists taking part in the survey said they had no idea what ‘tread depth’ meant, let alone what the UK legal requirements are.

According to Kwik Fit, 12 million drivers in the UK would confess to only checking their tyre tread less than once every six months, whereas 15% say they don’t ever check.

One in five have never checked their tyre wall condition, whilst 12% have never checked their tyre pressure and only 44% of motorists in the UK say they check their tyre pressure at least once a month.

To make a point in a fun way, Kwik Fit sent out ‘wardens’ to check car tyres and ‘clamp’ the ones that were dangerously low. The reaction of the driver was then captured by hidden cameras and most went from anger at being clamped to concern about how dangerously low their tyres were and glad of the warning. They were then gifted a free tyre for taking part without their knowledge of what was happening.

Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, said: “These figures are alarming and prove we have a lot of work to do when it comes to tyre education,” also adding: “For all the safety developments car manufacturers are making, we have to remember that tyres are the only part of a car that are in contact with the road and so it is vital that they are in the best condition possible.”
