If so, you could face a fine of £100 and three points on your licence if caught

It’s Christmas time and for motorists up and down the country this means a lot more traffic on the roads. An estimated 11.5 million drivers are expected to take to the roads over the festive period, so with this in mind, it seems the perfect time to give motorists a small reminder as to the punishments handed out for hogging the middle lane.

In a recent poll it was found that middle-lane hoggers were the second biggest annoyance on the road after tailgaters but many drivers have no idea what the penalties are if caught actually hogging the middle lane on the motorway.

You can be fined £100 and also receive three penalty points on your licence if caught and with so many of us sharing the roads over the next 10 days, it’s time to eliminate some of those bad road habits.

It’s estimated that motorists will travel around 77 miles on average during the Christmas period, so getting from A to B in the safest way possible is hugely important.

Inconsiderate drivers, such as those who hog the middle lane or sit right up your bumper, can make a journey at any time of the year more stressful but when you add the busy Christmas period to the mix, it’s all the more trying.

According to previous research carried out by Confused.com, 37% of motorists in the UK had no idea that hogging the middle lane on the motorway was now a punishable offence.

This might have something to do with the fact that a lot of drivers were never taught how to drive on the motorway when they were learning.

From 2018, further changes will be made to the UK Driving Test and will include learner drivers being able to practice on motorways, a step which might go some way to reducing the number of middle lane hoggers and tailgaters on our motorways.

Being caught for either offence might also increase your car insurance premium as well as making a dent in your wallet/purse and potentially spoiling that clean driving licence you’re so proud of.
