Did black manage to keep top spot as the UK’s favourite car colour or has it lost its crown?

The UK’s favourite car colour in 2018 wasn’t black, as it turns out that almost 21% of all new cars registered last year were grey, therefore making it the UK’s new favourite car colour.

Black was toppled off its number one spot by grey, which has for the first time since records began managed to take top spot as the UK’s favourite car colour.

According to figures revealed by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), from all new cars registered in 2018, a total of 495,127 (20.9%) were grey, with second place taken by black with sales of 478,154 (20.2%) and white in third place with 432,207 (18.3%) – these results mean that 59.4% of all new cars registered in 2018 were one of these top three colours.

In fact, grey did see a 1.1% decrease in registrations in comparison to 2017, however black suffered a 7.3% drop within the same period allowing for grey to sneak in and take top spot.

The top 10 included the usual favourite colours in the UK such as blue, however there was an increase for two colours with orange increasing by 37% and beige by 28%.

One colour that dropped out of the top 10 list was cream as it suffered a 34% decrease, whilst yellow fell by 34% with 132,000 fewer new cars registered since its peak back in 2015.

The top colour in Scotland last year was white, whilst grey managed to gain top spot in Wales and Northern Ireland.

Drivers in England registered a staggering 116 out of the 118 colours available to choose from, whilst just 53 different colours were picked by motorists in Northern Ireland.

“There are more opportunities than ever to personalise your new car to your exact taste, and UK motorists have approached the challenge with gusto in 2018,” said SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes.
