You could be issued with a £100 on-the-spot fine for careless driving!
Motorists are being warned about the importance of keeping their windscreen washer fluid topped up, as not doing so could put themselves and other road users at risk.
It’s vital that your washer fluid is kept topped up to the correct level because it’s job is to keep the windscreen free from dirt and muck so that you have a constant clear view of the road ahead.
It’s also helpful during the winter months for removing ice and snow. When the weather is really cold, you can add antifreeze to help clear the snow and ice from your windscreen.
Many motorists fail to carry out simple maintenance checks on their cars which are more essential during the winter months – your windscreen washer fluid should be checked at least once a week in winter, so that it’s always kept topped up to the correct level.
As a general rule, the level should be checked once every month but during the winter it makes sense to check more often. Washer fluid doesn’t cost a lot of money and is available from petrol stations, motoring stores and many supermarkets.
Drivers who fail to keep their windscreen washer fluid topped up could be punished for careless driving, as your vision can be greatly impaired if you drive around with a dirty windscreen, making it dangerous for yourself and other road users.
You could be issued with an on-the-spot fine of £100 and handed three penalty points for careless driving. However, depending on the severity of the offence and whether your case ends up in court, your fine could increase to a hefty £5,000.
If in court it’s found that the offence is not necessarily your fault but the court suggests the state of your vehicle or actions could have made the circumstances worse, a penalty may still be issued.
