Recent bad weather provides car thieves with perfect opportunity as drivers leave their cars unattended

New research has revealed that car thieves in the UK are making the most of the recent bad weather by targeting drivers who leave their vehicle defrosting on the driveway or on the side of the road.

As a result, drivers are being warned about the threat of being targeted by car thieves whilst the bad weather continues.

According to the AA, criminals are targeting cars left on driveways or on the side of the road whilst they defrost in the mornings and advises drivers to not leave their vehicles unattended.

Not only are you leaving your vehicle vulnerable to opportunist thieves but it is an illegal offence to leave your vehicle running and unattended, resulting in a fine if caught by the police.

You also run the risk of invalidating your insurance policy, so the best thing to do is make extra time to clear your vehicle and stay with it whilst all the ice and snow clears properly.

Many drivers are reportedly leaving their cars running whilst they go back inside to stay warm!

One tweet by the Central Motorway Police Group read: “Seriously!!! That’s 6 cars stolen in last 30 mins just because people have left them unattended to defrost. Come on people, don’t do it!!”

When snow and icy weather’s on the way the best advice is to leave your car in the garage if you have one or if left outside, place a piece of cardboard over the windscreen. Always keep a scraper and some de-icer in your vehicle and use them to clear all of the ice and snow away before you set off.
